South Africa

What to know before you drive.

Practical advice on driving, fuel, tolls and car rental before setting off in South Africa.

  1. Keep handbags and valuables out of sight, even if you are only leaving the vehicle for a few minutes.
  2. All of our South African rentals include excess-free cover, including windscreens, tyres and undercarriage damage, provided the rental conditions are followed. Damage caused by negligence, misuse or driving through deep water is not covered. To date, no renter booking through us has been charged for vehicle damage.
  3. The vehicle is supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be returned full. We recommend refuelling close to your return location to avoid additional refuelling charges.
  4. When turning right, give way to oncoming traffic and wait until it is safe to cross.
  5. In South Africa, you drive on the left-hand side of the road. A simple reminder is “left close, right far”. When turning left, enter the closest lane. When turning right, enter the lane farther away.
  6. Do not drive too close to the left edge of the road. Travellers unfamiliar with driving on the left can easily misjudge the distance between the vehicle and roadside obstacles.
  7. Some toll points may not accept every international payment method, so keep a small amount of cash available when travelling longer distances.
  8. Watch your speed when entering towns. Speed limits can change quickly, particularly around places such as Knysna, Wilderness, Stellenbosch and Swellendam.
Namibia

What to know before you drive.

Practical advice on long distances, gravel roads, fuel and car rental before setting off in Namibia.

  1. Keep handbags and valuables out of sight, even if you are only leaving the vehicle for a few minutes.
  2. Our Namibia rentals include excess-free cover, including windscreen and tyre cover, provided the rental conditions are followed. Damage caused by negligence, misuse or a breach of the rental agreement may still be charged. To date, no renter booking through us has been charged for vehicle damage.
  3. The vehicle is supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be returned full. We recommend refuelling close to your return location to avoid additional refuelling charges.
  4. When turning right, give way to oncoming traffic unless a traffic signal gives you a protected right turn.
  5. In Namibia, you drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  7. Many of Namibia’s routes include long stretches of gravel. Reduce your speed and allow more travelling time than the distance may suggest.
  8. Check your tyres before long gravel sections. Tyre pressure depends on the vehicle, load and road conditions, so follow the rental company’s recommended settings rather than using a generic pressure.
  9. Where possible, avoid long-distance driving after dark. Wildlife, livestock and changing road conditions can be much harder to see at night.

We rented a car through Stav during our 3 week trip in SA. Stav was extremely helpful, and having full coverage and his help was much appreciated when we were involved in a minor car accident. Stav took care of everything and we got a replacement vehicle without any problems, additional charges etc.

Furthermore, his website is a goldmine with useful tips and recommendations. We booked a whale watching experience following the recommendation on his website which was amazing. Although we visited at the end of the whale season, the company took extra time to locate a whale and in the end it paid off! We got to see a Bryde’s whale! We wholeheartedly recommend Stav!!

We received from Stav a complete trip plan that fits exactly the group (a family with 4 children aged 11 to 18), including travel routes during the day. The recommendations are excellent and accurate. Accommodations in amazing locations and at great prices.

Stav took care of booking vehicles and a variety of attractions. Feel confident that you have someone to talk to when you are in Africa – Stav is always available to help, even with booking the WILD CARD. (We didn’t have to worry about anything). Highly recommended!!!!

A very warm recommendation to use the local agent Stav!!! for planning a trip, booking accommodations and cars.

He arranged for us the route, hotels, car, recommendations for attractions, restaurants, etc. and was available for any need, there is no reason not to use him, he closes the hotels at the same price as Booking or other websites, Stav has a very good relationship with the hotels and restaurants he works with and when you come through him you receive good and preferential treatment!

I used Stav for help, and not for the first time, in booking hotels and vehicles for a trip to Victoria Falls and South Africa that I planned myself. In addition, I received very useful advice and tips from Stav that contributed greatly to the success of the trip. Stav is professional, courteous, patient, and available. I highly recommend using his services.
