Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Never leave handbags or valuables visible in the car, even for a few minutes.
Choose Full Coverage Insurance: Rent a car with full participation cancellation. Some companies offer “non-participation” insurance but may charge for damages under the negligence clause if no other vehicle is involved. With us, this does not apply, and none of our tenants have ever been charged for damage.
Fuel Policies: Fuel prices are regulated. Many drivers prefer not to refuel before returning the car. Rental companies typically refill for about 45 rand + the cost of fuel. If you refuel before returning, do so at the airport; even a two-liter shortfall could result in a charge.
Right of Way: Right turns do not have the right of way unless there is a traffic light with an arrow. Allow traffic to pass before proceeding.
Driving on the Left: In Namibia, drive on the left-hand side of the road. Remember: “Left close, right far”—turn left into the near lane and right into the far lane.
Stay Cautious on the Left: Avoid driving too close to the left side. Most vehicle damage occurs to the left mirror or bumper.
Toll Gates: Toll gates may not accept international credit cards, so carry cash (South African rand is often accepted).
Check Tire Pressure: Before your trip, check the vehicle’s tire pressure at a gas station. Consult locals for recommendations, as the ideal pressure (often around 150) may vary depending on the road conditions.
Plan Ahead for Unique Roads: Namibia’s roads can vary greatly in condition. Prepare accordingly, especially for off-road or remote areas.
Book Early: Secure your accommodation as early as possible, especially for safaris, as they fill up quickly. Contact us for discounts.
Currency: South African rands are widely accepted in Namibia, making transactions more convenient for travelers.
Prepare for Long Distances: Namibia’s journeys can be long. If you’re traveling far, consider the cost of returning your rental car at a different location and flying back.
Road Safety: Drive carefully on gravel roads, which are common in Namibia. Check your tire pressure regularly, as road conditions can vary.
Fuel Planning: Fuel stations may be far apart. Always refuel when you can, and keep cash on hand, as some stations may not accept cards.
Wildlife Awareness: Be cautious when driving, especially at dusk or dawn, as wildlife may cross the roads unexpectedly.
Health Precautions: Pack a basic first-aid kit and ensure you stay hydrated, particularly when exploring the desert regions.
Weather and Clothing: Namibia’s climate can vary greatly. Dress in layers to adapt to cooler mornings and evenings and warmer midday temperatures.
Connectivity: Mobile signal can be limited in remote areas, so consider downloading maps and important travel information in advance.
Respect Local Cultures: Namibia is home to diverse cultures and traditions. Show respect and sensitivity when interacting with locals.
