Why we started, and what we insisted on.

When we launched our car rental service in 2018, one thing became clear very quickly. Travellers wanted simple, transparent rentals without excess surprises.

Questions around damage, windscreens, tyres, scratches, assessor fees and undercarriage cover can make car rental confusing. Through us, these are included where applicable to the destination and rental conditions, while we still work hard to keep our rates competitive.

Do you have to pay the excess first and claim it back later?

For most of our destinations, the answer is no. We offer excess-free cover rather than a reimbursement system, meaning you are not expected to pay for covered damage upfront and then complete forms or wait for a refund.

For most destinations, we provide a comprehensive no-charge policy for damages rather than a traditional refund system, eliminating any upfront obligations.

To date, no renter booking through us has been charged for vehicle damage.

When could you still be liable for damage?

Excess-free cover applies as long as the rental conditions are followed. If damage is caused by negligence, unlawful use or a breach of the rental agreement, the rental company may still charge for the damage.

This includes situations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, unauthorised drivers, misuse of the vehicle or ignoring road and safety conditions.

Some rental companies also classify single-vehicle accidents as negligence simply because no other vehicle was involved. We do not partner with providers that apply this type of blanket exclusion.

What else should you know before renting a car?

One-way returnsIf you collect and return the vehicle in different locations, a one-way fee may apply. We will make any applicable fee clear before payment.
Your credit cardThe main driver must have a credit card in their own name with sufficient available credit for the rental deposit. We recommend carrying a second card as a backup.
Your driving licenceBring a valid driving licence that is clearly readable in English. If it is not in English, an international driving permit or English translation may be required.

We rented a car through Stav during our 3 week trip in SA. Stav was extremely helpful, and having full coverage and his help was much appreciated when we were involved in a minor car accident. Stav took care of everything and we got a replacement vehicle without any problems, additional charges etc.

Furthermore, his website is a goldmine with useful tips and recommendations. We booked a whale watching experience following the recommendation on his website which was amazing. Although we visited at the end of the whale season, the company took extra time to locate a whale and in the end it paid off! We got to see a Bryde’s whale! We wholeheartedly recommend Stav!!
